Finished

Hello,

Our new album 'atlantic wires' is finished. Honestly, it really is finished. I'm not kidding, I'm listening to it right now.

Here's the track listing,

atlantic wires
autumn fires
alder tree
beachcomber
danger pay
sleep talk
nearer to
the rushes
5am
driver nowhere
lose myself
silence

We're going to post a few songs onto our website and onto myspace by the end of this week. We'll let you know when we do !

Until then, there's all the boring admin to be done. But hey, it means we'll hopefully get some money from radio play. Also, all the album sale proceeds will be used to fund a vinyl single release.

It's nice to be back.

finishing touches

If everything goes according to plan, this should be our last week of getting the new album finished. Excited? I know I am.

In Sickness and In Health

Amidst the demands of everyday stuff and in the face of illness, we are making sufficient progress with the new album. It is a 13 track full-length called "Atlantic Wires" that we will be releasing through our own label, Auteur Recordings. It's now all down to mixing and mastering, really.

Speaking personally, I have never been so proud of an album, as a whole, as I am with "Atlantic Wires". The process of writing, recording and, especially, collaborating long distance is never without trial and error, but the longer we work at it, the more we understand each other and what we want to accomplish. Most importantly, to can take that knowledge and create something we are both extremely pleased with.

We'll be sure to keep everyone updated on the upcoming "Atlantic Wires" release.

Alder Tree

When we don't have to think about other things, Dan and I have been thinking about our music. Recently, there hasn't been a great deal of it. But that's ok. I think that an important part of the creative process is not thinking. Songs show themselves during sleep, on long car rides and in the shower. When eyes are half closed, music and words appear out of nowhere. Reminds me of a certain analogy...couldn't have put it better myself, I say.

Ever so often I daydream about Yorkshire and I daydream about trees, and sometimes, they are seen together.

New Music Canada - Song Of The Day

Today, I'm pleased to say that the song "Tiny Robot Love" was chosen for the New Music Canada Track of the Day on CBC radio3.

So I'd like to say "Thanks CBC radio3!" It's nice to get some Canadian love (to the tune of Tiny Robot love).

hearts tied to satellites

Lately I've been listening to some of our early songs, and getting nostalgic with it.
Writing and recording in Leeds seems like a lifetime ago, like another life even.

I'm intensely proud of the music we've recorded and that people are beginning to discover our back catalogue, like digging up our buried treasure. Most of these are free to download at thepapertigersound.com

In the space of two and a half years, we've released 1 album (fujipop), 1 mini album (the last days are taking forever), 4 ep's (broken chords, lost tapes, this is how it ends, tiny robot love) and two singles (coast is clear, magnetic north).

...and that's not including songs like 'under stars' which appear to be lost on the internet somewhere.

We don't think that's too bad either.

So what's next? Well, as I said in the previous blog we're going to make some short films. And don't be too surprised to see some Vinyl or CD releases by the end of the year. We'll also keep releasing free songs 'cause we all like something for nothing.

And if that's not enough, what else can two people do who live on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean?

this and that

Since the writing and recording of 'tiny robot love' and 'the last days are taking forever', we've been sitting back and trying to relax without much success. We're planning on making a couple of short films and we've some new songs in the making. All good stuff, but we're not in any hurry to finish or release anything just yet.

We've been overwhelmed by the response to 'tiny robot love', and it took us a little bit by surprise if we're honest. So here's hoping the release of 'the last days are taking forever' (out on Monday 18th May on Hungry Audio) is as successful.

A live version of the papertiger sound will happen later this year. I've been in fleeting rehearsals now for a while, figuring out which songs work live and which don't. We've also been talking about papertiger sound performances taking place simultaneously in the UK (Dan) and Canada (Kerstin), which would be nice a stop gap until we can both play live together again.

The Last Days Are Taking Forever

I've spent the last few days uploading all our ep's and albums to the new website. Although it feels as if it's taken forever to complete, it feels good to have everything up at last. Kerstin has been hard at work creating new collages for the website, and they all look pretty damn fab to me. We're dead proud of our new home on the internet, and we've done our best to be as creative as possible with it, such as adding a mini photodiary and putting up more videos (with more in the making !)

The new ep's...well, they do exist!! We're adding the final touches to the first, and there will be another two to follow. We'll let you know about release dates etc. soon, so be sure to sign up to our mailing list to be the first to find out.

Ok, that's all for now. Have a great weekend !

Official Website

Dan and I have been busily working on the PTS official website. There is a lot more to do, but it's coming along nicely. If you have any suggestions for the new site (or anything else for that matter), let us know. We aim to please. Feel free to contact us via our website or by commenting here.

New songs are also being worked on. Some of them should be released within the next couple of months. Vague, I know. But let it be known that we are both very much looking forward to putting new music out there (here, and everywhere) for your listening pleasure.

Winter Road, Green Valley

I've been hiding in the lovely Annapolis Valley (amongst the snow covered fur trees) for about a week now. It is so beautiful here. Yesterday I took a drive through rolling hills, past old farm houses, apple orchards and along the sparse but awe provoking coastline. I can't help but be inspired.

The songs "Word Escape Me" and "Hockney" are coming along very nicely. I added some vocals and sent them across the Atlantic for Dan. "It's your turn." At times, our tag team approach to recording music can be quite exciting. We never know what the other is going to come up with. Thankfully it's hardly ever (perhaps, never?) a disappointment.

Today, I plan to work on "Out Of The In Scene" and then patiently wait for Dan to send over some more files.

You know folks, it's not so bad.

disco

Hello, how are you ?

We're all good. The Shifty Disco record label has released 'Green' as part of their Singles download club. We've also been getting some radio play from BBC Radio Norfolk Introducing, and the ep 'This Is How It Ends' continues to do well on Itunes, Amazon and all the other places one might buy music as a digital download.

The new album is still in the making, Kerstin is writing in Nova Scotia and I'm humming songs down the A roads of Norfolk. Even though we're about 3,000 miles from each other, we still manage to write songs together. It never ceases to amaze me.

few and far between

So, it appears we're making an album. That's why updates have been few and far between. Song working titles include;

worlds end
hockney
the sea
lower canada
words escape me
emperor
out of the in scene
tiny robot love
Fish and Bear

It all feels very wintery.

The Papertiger Sound 'live' is happening, but slowly. Writing & recording an album, rehearsing and then trying to do normal everyday stuff, like buying bread, takes time.

I think I'll do some filming this weekend....

working it out

I've roped in an old friend to join the papertiger sound live, and we're currently experimenting using Ableton Live 7 as the backbone of the live performance. Guitars, vocals, Keyboards and MIDI pads for triggering samples are also being used, and we're working out which songs work with this set up. I've spent the past three nights chopping up songs into small loops, and my eyes are going bleary.

Hopefully we'll know how this is going to work out by Christmas, though a performance is unlikely until the new year :(

Pictures & videos will be posted soon.

a photograph

We're working on Lower Canada, it's sounding good. Sending files across the Atlantic is cheaper than the airfare, but I know where I'd rather be when recording. Field Song is also coming along nicely, so is Emperor.

wrap yourself in light

I've just recorded a new song called 'Field Song', it will now be sent over to Kerstin in Canada to work on & add some Wilson magic.

My eyes are now sore, and my head hurts. I'm also up way too late with far too much to do tomorrow. And yet here I am blogging.

Tomorrow I'm buying a new set of MIDI drum pads to play live with. Money is short, but I managed to sell a few things on ebay to fund the purchase. So I'm really hoping it's going to work as I imagine it should in my head.

I've been offered a gig in Berlin, which would be nice to do but not realistic at the moment. I'm not prepared to play live at the moment, but hopefully should be by Christmas.

The latest ep 'This is How it Ends' is now for sale on ITunes worldwide. So if you missed a chance to buy a handmade copy from me, you can still get hold it from the good people at Apple.

Any reviews or comments of the EP on the ITunes store is appreciated !

A Miracle

Today I got time to start reworking songs to play live and figuring out my guitar sounds. However, I quickly found out I'd forgotten how to play many of the songs. There was much head scratching and 'what on earth am I playing there?' talk to myself. Still, it's coming together.

Lo Casta Y Fuji is sounding good, and so is Magnetic North (surprisingly). There's so many songs I'd like to play, but to be honest some will work live and some just don't sound right with this set up - Guitar, Midi Drum Pads, Keyboard & Macbook.

But I'm enjoying myself. A miracle.

alive

I'm going to play live again, and to be honest I find it a little scary. eeeek.

I'm working out a set list as i type, trying to find different ways to approach the songs so they work live. I'm also dragging friends off the streets to play some electronic drums, keyboards and do computer stuff. It's going to take a little to get it right, and will hopefully be playing live for Christmas.

Once rehearsals are up and running, I'll post pictures and video.

I must be mental ;-)

lower canada

I have just about completed a new song called 'lower canada'.  Lower Canada is, or rather was, an area of my home town that was pulled down in the 1960's in the name of progress. Le Corbusier has a lot to answer for.

Indian Summer

Autumn is nearly here, but we're having an indian summer, or so i'm told. Which is good as I get to work in the garden a little more. I always write more at this time of year, though I'm not sure why. I've now four new pieces of half written music. Which I intend to finish. Tomorrow I shall go into town, drink coffee and look for something good to read.

I'm currently listening Laura Groves. She's from Shipley in West Yorkshire, which is not too far from where I used to live in Leeds, or the wonderful 1853 Gallery at Salts Mills in Saltaire, home of my hero David Hockney. But yes, Laura Groves is wonderful stuff, especially her latest single 'I am Leaving'.

Ok that's it, to bed for me.

new songs

For the past few weeks i've been working on new songs, though i think the word 'working' isn't really the the word i was looking for. I pick the guitar up, play for two minutes, hum a few melodies, say a few random words that come to mind and seem to fit, put the guitar down and get on with normal life. That happens about two or three times a day, mostly. Anyway, last night I set up the computer to record, made a little drum track and recorded two guitars. Job done, and I could go to bed.

I'd like to do something different with these new songs, though I'm not quite sure yet. I thought about making a film, but I've got tons and tons of footage already, gathering dust somewhere, so I don't think adding to it is going to help. It just feels really good to be recording again, and without purpose.

The EP 'This is How it Ends' is to be released by Egress. I'll post a link to the website once it's up and running proper. What this means is that the EP will be available to buy from ITunes and other such online stores. This is great because it means, at least in my mind, the papertiger sound feels like a proper band, although for the most part it's just me in it.

telling stories

lately, i've had mail asking what my songs are about. so, i've decided to tell all by updating the papertiger sound's LastFM page. this will take some time, i'm sure.

as more time passes, the easier and more interesting it becomes for me to listen to my back catalogue of songs. with time, objectivity becomes easier and i can see a little more clearly where i was in my head when i wrote a particular piece of music. i'm already looking forward to new songs becoming old.

ep finds home

a new record label came round my house last night and i gave it some red wine.

as the bottle was emptied, it said it would release 'this is how it ends' and put it on itunes. a good nights work. more to come later.

begin again

hi, this is the new home for the papertiger sound. it may be temporary, it may not. i haven't decided yet.

i'm going use this blog to post stuff as and when it arrives, it may be new songs, it may be pictures, it may just be me talking about some random thought that's stuck in my head at that time.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it, so add this site to your favourites and check back everyday.
